Story behind the song
I'm finishing out another album, and the title of this song was written 15 years ago, but the lyrics and tune, yesterday. It's about how the Olympic Torch begins a journey months before any of the Olympic Games, in Olympia Greece, and then is run through multiple countries to finally be brought to light the fires before the Olympic Games. Surprisingly there's been attempts to douse the flames, stop the runners, etc. so they have multiple torches lit by the same flames, to ensure the same flames from Greece light the fires in the Olympics. This Christian message of Good News is a flame we need to carry to a lost and dying world. Jesus told us to carry that torch. Are you doing that, today?
Lyrics
Every two years they light the flames At the site of the first Olympic Games And from that fire a torch is lit And a runner comes to carry it Across the fields and valleys wide On the winding roads and mountainside The torch will pass from hand to hand Till it lights a fire in a distant land Carry the torch! Carry the flames! To the next Olympic Games! Through wind and the rain! Through night and through day! Though some may rise to bar your way! No matter the cost! No matter how far! To the ends of the earth Or the furthest star Carry the torch! Carry the torch! Two thousand years and an empty tomb And the sound of wind in an upper room The Disciples caught eternal flame To carry abroad their Master’s name Across the fields and valleys wide On the winding roads and mountainside The torch will pass from hand to hand Till it lights a fire in a distant land Carry the torch! Carry the flame! Spread the Good News in Jesus’ Name! Through wind and the rain! Through night and through day! Though some may rise to bar your way! No matter the cost! No matter how far! To the ends of the earth Or the furthest star Carry the torch! Carry the torch!
